During the Corpus Christi procession held every year in the village of Lagartera, young women parade in centuries-old costumes that are still worn by the women of the village. Through her great-grandmother’s costume, Lita feels the legacy of an identity steeped in sacred traditions and inherited fears. An ancient superstition haunts her: the idea that bloodthirsty lizards can climb up women’s legs during their menstruation. Caught between reality and imagination, Lita avoids this encounter with the lizard while she is on her period.
Straddling documentary and fiction, Mal de Madre, with a cast of non-actors and a dreamlike quality reminiscent of Buñuel, paints a choral portrait of the women of the village of Lagartera where, as in all communities, customs, knowledge, songs and superstitions are passed down from generation to generation, channelling cultural heritage and the weight of tradition. Mal de Madre also shows how the remnants of the ancestral past coexist with the present of contemporary young people.
